Important tips for using your own image. If you would like to have one of your own photos/designs turned into a tile mural, here are some tips that may help.
Resolution The size and clarity of the finished image is dependant on the quality of the original image. e.g.: A photo taken on an 8 megapixel (or higher) digital camera, will usually reproduce perfectly up to 150x90cm or even larger. However, the same taken on a mobile phone will hardly cover two tiles without serious image deterioration. If you have an image and you are concerned about it's clarity, or would like to know how large we can make it, let us know and we can evaluate it for you (free of charge).
Cropping To fit the selected image to fully cover a chosen number of tiles there may be some cropping of the image necessary. Most of the time this can be done without negatively effecting the impact of the image. It is possible to have an image that begins part way through a tile, but this is not as effective as covering the entire tile. Our tiles can be cut down to fit a space, this is best left to professional tilers to prevent surface chipping.
Grouting When deciding the layout of your tiles, keep in mind where the thin lines of grouting will be in relation to the overall image. For example - If you have an image that you wish to divide over four square tiles, then it is best to avoid having the focal point of that image dead centre. Instead consider spreading the image over more tiles, or cropping the image so that the focus is more off centre. Generally we recommend 1.5mm - 2.0mm grouting allowance. If you are unsure if your image is going to be adversely effected by grout lines, we can do a mock-up for you before you commit to anything - so you can be sure it will work. * To find out the steps involved in ordering your tiles, click here.
