Tips on selecting images.

All images provided  for reproduction are first thoroughly assessed (free of charge) for any issues of concern. We will never proceed with an order until we are confident that the finished result will be of the highest possible standard. This can all be left to us, but if you would like to get an idea of the factors we take into account then please read on.

Resolution

The size and clarity of the finished image depends on the quality of the original image. e.g.: A photo taken on an eight megapixel (or higher) digital camera, will usually reproduce nicely up to 150 x 90cm or even larger.  However, the same taken on a low resolution camera (such as some mobile phones) may only cover four tiles without some image deterioration.  Our tiles are printed at 300dpi (the same as photo-labs) and all images are converted to this resolution prior to printing.

Cropping

To fit the selected image to fully cover a chosen number of tiles there may be some cropping of the image necessary. Most of the time this can be done without negatively effecting the image.  In fact, some images actually benefit from cropping.  It is possible to have the image end part way through a tile, but not usually as effective.

Grouting

When deciding the layout of your tiles, keep in mind where the thin lines of grouting  will be in relation to the overall image. For example - If you have an image that you wish to divide over four square tiles, then it is best to avoid having the focal point of that image dead centre. Instead consider spreading the image over more tiles, or cropping the image so that the focus is more off centre. Generally we recommend 1.5mm - 2.0mm grouting allowance. If you are unsure if your image is going to be adversely effected by grout lines, we can do a mock-up for you before you commit to anything - so you can be sure it will work.
